Being a leader is not only about speaking, deciding, guiding, or mobilizing.
It is also about knowing how to listen—especially to what is uncomfortable.
Because the moment you carry responsibility, you become visible. And the moment you become visible, you become open to criticism.
Criticism can be unfair, clumsy, exaggerated, or poorly expressed. But it can also contain a useful truth.
👉🏽 A mature leader does not react first to defend himself.
They listen first to understand.
Receiving criticism well does not mean accepting everything.
It means taking the time to distinguish:
🔹 what is true
🔹 what is exaggerated
🔹 what is useful
🔹 what is malicious
🔹 what can help you improve
A fragile leader turns every criticism into a personal attack.
They shut down.
They justify themselves immediately.
They attack the person speaking.
They try to protect their image.
A strong leader does something different.
They ask:
✔️ What does this criticism reveal?
✔️ Is there something I need to correct?
✔️ Is there an issue I did not see?
✔️ Is there a perception I need to better understand?
In a family, an organization, or a civic movement, no one grows without feedback.
Well-received criticism can become a tool for clarity.
It can correct a mistake.
It can improve a method.
It can prevent a drift.
It can strengthen trust.
But for that, humility is required.
👉🏽 Those who want to lead without ever being corrected want to be admired, not to grow.
Receiving criticism with maturity means saying:
I may not like how this is being said.
But I will check if there is something useful in it.
That too is leadership.
Not the absence of mistakes, but the ability to adjust.
Not an ego that protects itself, but a mission that comes before the ego.
In the end, the real question is not:
Why am I being criticized?
The real question is:
What can this criticism help me improve?
Because a leader who refuses all criticism eventually surrounds themselves with silence.
And silence around a leader is often the beginning of their most serious mistakes.
